No Way Out

My wife just sent me this, asking me what I can do without infringing the Highway Code:

impasseIt almost seems to be an image of the Church these days!

Highway codes seem to be about the same in most countries. Perhaps you can turn round and go back the way by which you came, if that was not a one-way street. There seems to be one way out, but it looks like a country lane and perhaps not suitable for motor vehicles, and perhaps only goes to a farm.

I have another idea of a solution (legal), but I’ll wait for some of you to comment.

Ideas, anyone?

  1. It doesn’t look like anything stops you from crossing the road, hanging a u turn a then going in whichever direction you choose; all I can see on the other side is a stop sign. Alternatively, you could ditch the car and walk, which would make the trip more interesting.

    • Yes, exactly my idea. Go to the other side of the main road, turn round where there is only a STOP sign but no signs stopping you from turning left or right. The other possibility is to infringe the signs making sure you don’t get caught by the police! That’s the French way! 😀

In Boston Massachusetts they are forever changing the direction of lesser streets. One day several years ago while such changes were underway I attempted a shortcut across the back of Beacon Hill. I came to a crossroad where, obviously, the process had been interrupted at quitting time. There were four “One Way” arrows, all pointing at each other, providing no legal way to proceed. I took the “French solution” as you outline it.

One, in Vermont, that I, alas, didn’t have a chance to investigate, was a side street with, on the same post, a One Way arrow pointing inward, and a No Outlet sign. I wondered how many cars were trapped down that street.

In your picture, I think the left turn just before the do not enter sign is a real option. There is some kind of sign there whose face is obscured by the Stop sign.

The do not enter sign is not at the crossroads where you can not turn left or right but at the split of the dirt road into two. See how it is further back. You can go straight and bear left or do a u-turn.
