   Amen! It only now occurs to me reading this that that may be why the Antiphon ‘O Oriens’ is sung today in many a Use!

   I wonder how far another Advent accent may be at work here, too? – the fine Old English adaptation of the Antiphon in the Exeter Book begins ‘Eala Earendel’ and in the Old English Blickling Homily for the Birth of St. John the Baptist, he is called ‘the new Eorendel’:

   It is good to think of St. John the Baptist and ‘doubting’ St. Thomas together as witnesses on the darkest day!

   Just catching up with Dr. Parker’s Advent posts for this year at A Clerk of Oxford, I was delighted to read, “Medieval liturgists were some of the greatest literary critics who ever lived – sensitive and imaginative readers of Scripture, who wove together connections between texts, between characters and words and ideas, and between moments in time, and hallowed the very act of reading as a way of trying to understand the mind of God.”
